After 18 years, Apple is discontinuing their iTunes program.
According to sources, Apple will instead launch a new trio of apps for the next MacBook OS in replacement of the media platform — Music, TV and Podcasts. With the removal of iTunes, customers can manage their Apple gadgets through the Music app.
iTunes was first revealed in 2001 as a solution to the music industry’s piracy plague. However, the introduction of subscription-based streaming has lowered the platform’s value and has significantly overtaken music downloads. According to the RIAA’s 2018 report, 75 percent of the U.S. music industry’s revenue came from streaming and only 11 percent from digital downloads.
